Aunt Cathy

My (Ashley here) aunt (my father's sister) passed away last week. It's times like these that make being so far away from family difficult. A lovely obituary along with comment contributions from those who knew Cathy can be found here. I didn't get to spend a ton of time with Aunt Cathy, but enough to know she loved her daughter and quilting. She also loved being a nurse. Being a fighter, she outlived her doctors' predictions for her life by about 4 & 1/2 years! She is definitely missed.

Mother's Day: Part Deux

So essentially this has nothing to do with Mother's Day, but was basically a much needed escape and what I had wanted to originally do last Sunday.

!!!SIX FLAGS!!!

We started off the day with Superman and then hopped over to Sky Screamer Backwards.
I took some video, but my phone and computer are not cooperating, I'll try again later.
Then we got SOAKED on Bug's White Water Rapids!

Note our visors....idk what Zack was thinking! ;)

If you squint you can see us in the front row of the leftmost picture

After trying to dry off a bit in the bathroom we decided to do Poltergeist.
Have you ever blacked out on a ride? Me neither....but I was milliseconds away from doing so!
CLICK HERE to see a video of the ride. Pay attention to how crazy fast it takes off. From the time the ride started to about the 40 second mark in the video I thought I was a goner, then there's a slight break in ride and my brain was like "oh, this isn't to infinity and beyond, we're good" and I was able to enjoy it.

To finish off the day we road Scream, which is basically a grown up version of that frog hopper they have at Enchanted Forest.....but I'll be darned....at over 200 feet I SCREAMED when that thing dropped!

I wanted to ride Goliath or the Iron Rattler (or both!) while we were there, but we were pretty worn out, hungry, and Zack was sun burned from being outside yesterday (basketball shoot-out at work).

We chowed down at Olive Garden and then crawled into bed for a nice long nap! When I awoke I went for a late evening walk, watched some TV, and now it's past 1am. All in all, I'd say it was a pretty solid day of fun!

Also, here's my pretty flowers Z brought home the other day.
I love that he is always thinking of me! <3

Mother's Day Weekend

Thursday night I went to see Divergent with my friend Kerri and she informed me that Friday she was going downtown to finalize the adoption of their foster baby, Ray. I asked to tag along so I could turn in some paperwork for my job. Yes, I found a job! I'll be working as a "Recreation Specialist (Site Manager)" for the San Antonio Parks and Recreation's summer program. The true definition should be employee supervisor, money handler, food watcher, equipment manager and glorified babysitter. Anyway, Zack dropped me off at the Nelson's at 7:30 and we all hopped in the car to drop off Josh (their oldest son) at school and beat rush traffic downtown. Everything went smoothly and the office I had to walk to was literally only a block and a half away from the courthouse. Here's a picture of the courthouse, the cathedral next door, and Ray with his adoptive parents Cole and Kerri. They've been awesome friends to us, and it's been a great help learning about fostering to adopt since that may very well be our future.

My favorite photo :)

This guy was "JUST HERE FOR JESUS!" Amazing addition to a perfect day.

We're so happy for these guys! Later that evening I dropped off the photos at their place along with a bottle of "Sweet Baby Ray's" BBQ Sauce (get it?) and a little something for Mother's Day.

Saturday I attended a baptism for the newest members of our ward because I was asked to sing. It was actually the first I've attended since my own almost 6 years ago and I'm so glad I was able to participate. After the ceremony my friend Stephanie and I hit the mall in search of some new shoes for her swelling feet (pregnancy will do that to ya!). We ended up finding a pair and then went to Freddy's for a burger and custard, yum! Zack had spent the day helping a friend move and was tired, so after a nap we went on a date and had a fun little evening.

Zack and I had agreed to play hooky from church on Mother's Day. I wanted to go to Six Flags to totally keep my mind off things and finally use our passes, but Z thought it would be too crowded and to watch a movie instead. He gave me a lovely massage and then we went on a long walk on the green way. It was hot, but felt great.

When we got home we Skyped with our families, showered, and called it a day. I'm thankful we decided to take a day off from church. I was much happier spending time with my husband and relaxing rather than seeing all the mother's at church getting praised and honored making me feel like crap and unworthy. It was my third mother's day like this, and after having spent two the latter way, I think we will skip again in the future if we are still in this position.

Anniversary-Birthday-Birthday 2014 Edition

A & Z on our Anniversary

Birthday Selfies

Went to an Easter Egg Hunt with Kerri

Desert, TV, and cuddles=perfection!

We've been waiting a long time to buy a washer and dryer, and for my birthday we were finally able to make it happen! I LOVE having my own! Always using coin laundry during our marriage I didn't really know any different, but now I don't think I can ever go back. It's so convenient, clean, and just easier/better all around!
Here's Z hooking up the dryer. <3

For Z's birthday he invited all his friends to breakfast at the Magnolia Pancake Haus. Very yummy!

Cole's gift, a massage from a sweet oriental woman who I don't think fully grasps the concept of a gift card. Adorable!

Zack blowing out the candles on his Munchener Apfel Pfannekuchen!

So what does 4 years married at 25 & 26 look like?

Jury Duty

Right before my brother came into town I got this in the mail.

Talk about scary! I've never had jury duty before and I had no idea what to expect. Everything I read and heard said "don't worry about it, you won't get chosen, they'll reach a plea agreement, it's no big deal." Well guess who got chosen to be on a jury!!! I so did not expect it at all!

I'm free to talk about the trial, and would be happy to share the case with anyone interested, but I thought it would be better if I just shared my overall experience here on the blog.

I had to get up before 6 am to get ready, take Zack to work, and get downtown (and find a parking spot!) before 8 am. I was extremely stressed out about going downtown on my own, but it ended up being extremely easy and not a big deal at all. After getting through the metal detectors I found the big room with all the other law abiding citizens sitting, waiting, giving up their day to essentially protect non law abiding citizens from our government (but Ashley, innocent till proven guilty! I know...I know..). It's all so silly really.

A little after 8, everyone was in their seat and a judge came in to explain the process to us, go over expectations, and tell some jokes. I chose to be amused, but most people were highly annoyed. After he stepped away to excuse people from duty (yep, you can be excused, but you have to have a legit reason......I guess 2 weeks of notice is enough to force you to cancel a trip or other life plans?) we all got our parking tickets stamped and then sat, and sat, and sat. Occasionally a woman would get up and read out names (often in groups of around 30 or 60 to make final juries of 6 or 12) to go line up in the hallway. Once called, people were escorted to a courtroom, and introduced to the case and those involved in it. Then you answer some questions to help them decide if they would like you or not. You then wait in the hall while they choose, go back in, and they call out the names of the chosen jurors to sit in the special juror chairs up by the stand.

I was called just before lunch, but they cancelled. Instead of letting us go, they made us go back and wait. We were told that if we hadn't been called by 3 pm we would be able to go home. It was almost 3....and the lady called my name! Argh! Ha! We went up to a courtroom, answered the questions (and the answers people give trying to obviously get out of it are hilarious and highly obnoxious), waited, and then came back in for the final choosing. I thought I was free, but then second to last they called my name! At this point it was the end of the day, so we were asked to come back at 10:30 am the next morning.

A case plays out pretty much exactly how you'd expect. Lots of formalities, drawn out explanations and playing to sympathies with a couple objections thrown in. The state was pressing charges against a drunk driver and while the state attorneys were very well put together and prepared, the defense seemed lost and uninformed. It was very odd. I honestly don't know what their problem was. It was painful to listen to either of them talk or ask questions. The judge and bailiff seemed annoyed with them too. The judge was on her computer the WHOLE time. All of us jurors wanted to know what she was doing. It looked like she and the bailiff were instant messaging each other their annoyances of the attorneys. Who knows. The court room was very worn down and sad looking. Same with the waiting room and building overall. We weren't in the old courthouse, which is actually fun to be in, but a large addition that I believe was built in the 80's. It was a long time to sit in uncomfortable worn down chairs.

There was a LOT of waiting even after the trial began. We'd show up in the morning, wait a half an hour or more to be called into the room, be in court for an hour, and then take a lunch break that without fail always lasted 2 hours. Who needs 2 hours to eat a sandwich? We'd often get out at the end of the day and get stuck in rush hour traffic.

It was a nice chunk of gas money and a huge chunk of time, but the state pays you! A whopping $6-10 a day! Most employers still pay you though. So if you are ever stuck with jury duty, definitely check that out (but know that they aren't required to if it isn't in your contract). There also was a bus pass option, but that would have taken even more time and there's the whole ick and scare factor there so I just drove and paid to park downtown.

The trial lasted several days, and while it lasted my time was no longer mine. With that said, it was still good to sit through the process and now I can say I have been on a jury!

GET IN MY MOUTH!

Now that we live in a big city, our options for dining out are endless. We've some great, and some not so great experiences, but our favorites have been with Cole. This guy knows food.

I have two awesome experiences I'd like to share. The first is Big Lou's Pizza. At Big Lou's you can get a 42 INCH PIZZA. Yes, you read that right. It was pretty satisfying too. Not great, but it's more about the novelty factor here, and they DEFINITELY have that.

The line waiting to get in as we were leaving. Good thing we got there early!

Our other favorite food adventure has been The Salt Lick. SO GOOD. I am desperately waiting for technology to provide us with smell-o-vision so I can share the best food smells I've ever smelled with you! This place is phenomenal.

Macklemore?

Brisket, Sausage, Ribs, YUM!
I'm dying to go back here!

On our way home we stopped at Buc-ee's, the biggest gas station and store not intended for semi's that I've ever seen! Only in Texas!

Candy, anyone?

Spring Break

Ashley's brother visited us over his spring break. We watched sports & movies, explored downtown, and ate great food!

EW!

Attempting to get Zack to smile for a picture...

Alamodome

He also helped us fix our truck! :p

He was able to fix it, but we still had to make a trip to a wreck yard for some parts.

Rudy's BBQ

We went to see The Lego Movie at the Alamo Drafthouse, and then we just had to get some real Legos!
There's a Lego store at the North Star Mall right next to the theater we were at, so Z finally got a Delorean set. I've been wanting to get this for some time now.

Last activity of the visit: ICE HOCKEY!

We had a great time and are so grateful David was able to visit and explore our new city with us!
